Method

Fuel needed is estimated by dividing trip distance by vehicle mileage. Estimated cost is that fuel quantity multiplied by the fuel price entered.

Worked example

A 320 km return trip at 16 km per litre needs about 20 litres. At Rs. 100 per litre, the simple fuel estimate is Rs. 2,000.

Start with the distance you will actually travel

Use the one-way route distance when you only need to travel in one direction. Choose a return trip when the same route will be driven both ways, or enter the full expected distance if your return route is different.

Add a modest buffer for city driving, detours, parking, or a hotel stop. A route estimate is a planning number, not a record of the exact kilometres your vehicle will cover.

Use realistic mileage and fuel price figures

Mileage is the number of kilometres your vehicle travels on one litre of fuel. Use a real-world estimate where possible, since traffic, hills, air conditioning, tyre pressure, and driving style can change fuel use.

Enter the current local price you expect to pay. The calculator divides total distance by mileage to estimate litres, then multiplies the litres by the fuel price.

Keep trip costs separate from fuel cost

Fuel is only one part of a road-trip budget. Tolls, parking, food, accommodation, servicing, and insurance are not included in this estimate.

Use the fuel total as one budget line, then add other known costs separately. This makes it easier to compare driving with another travel option.
