Divide minutes by sixty
An hour contains 60 minutes, so a minute value becomes a decimal by dividing it by 60. Fifteen minutes is 0.25 hours, 30 minutes is 0.50 hours, and 45 minutes is 0.75 hours.
Add that fraction to the whole hours. Seven hours and 30 minutes is 7.50 decimal hours, not 7.30 hours.
Multiply a decimal fraction by sixty
To reverse the conversion, keep the whole number as hours and multiply the decimal part by 60. For 6.75 hours, the decimal part is 0.75, which becomes 45 minutes.
The converter rounds the result to the nearest minute. This helps when a spreadsheet or time-tracking system provides a decimal value that needs to be read as ordinary time.
Treat rounding as a separate step
A precise conversion does not decide how a business rounds time. A policy may use exact minutes, two decimal places, or intervals such as five, six, ten, or fifteen minutes.
Convert first, then apply the documented payroll, timesheet, or client billing rule. Keep the original time record when an approval or audit may require it.
